I'm trying to remember the title of an historical romance novel I read years back, approximately 1993...but the novel had been published years before that. I remember it being a very long book, something around the 1000 page mark (but I've been wrong before); I remember the title being something like Xanadu or Zanzibar...but neither of those are right (I've been scouring the www); I remember the cover had a depiction of some of the characters in the novel (as most romance novels do, no real nugget there) and across the top in large letters is the one-word title (at least I think the title is 1 word, there could've been more words in much smaller text underneath but I'm not sure about that); I remember that it's about a woman who resists falling in love with the hero, he used to be handsome but his face was scarred, he seemed mean and cruel to her in the beginning...it may have taken place in Africa...could've been India...could've been something to do with one of the colonies of England...I'm think it took place in the 19th century...possibly the 18th...I really wish I had more to go on...is any of this striking a chord in anyone?
