I really want to find this book! I can't remember either title or author, but here's what I remember of the plot/premise: -the hero had been locked away in a sanitarium; His mother (or grandmother) gets his release, but only because the elder sibling (s) is dead and she want heirs. He comes back chained, and she keeps him in a cage. He doesn't talk in the beginning of the story. -the heroine is bought/blackmailed by the (grand)mother.
ONE SCENE THAT I REMEMBER... is when the heroine visits the hero in the dungeon, and she brings him some gingerbread. When she leaves him, she walks about a bit in the dark until he gives her his candle. After she leaves, he brushes rats off the wrapped bread, then breaks off a piece to give to them.
I have read that one! Sadly I also can't remember the name of it and I would love to read it again. I had forgotten about it, but now I'm going to do some looking around and see if I come up with anything.
